UPVC Door Won't Lock? A Troubleshooting Guide

A UPVC door that suddenly won't lock isn't always a broken mechanism — sometimes it's something simple you can check yourself first.

Check the door is fully closed

Sounds obvious, but a door that hasn't fully engaged with the frame won't let the multipoint hooks line up, so it'll feel like the lock itself is at fault.

Look for door sag

If the door has dropped slightly on its hinges, the hooks may no longer line up with the keeps in the frame — try lifting the handle while gently pushing the door into the frame.

Try a dry lubricant

A dry PTFE spray in the keyway and along the multipoint edge can free up a mechanism that's simply stiff from lack of lubrication — avoid oil-based sprays, which attract grit.

Listen to what the handle does

If lifting the handle feels loose or doesn't engage anything, that usually points to the gearbox rather than something you can fix with adjustment.

When to call a locksmith

If none of the above helps, or the door has jammed with the hooks partly engaged, stop trying to force it and call — forcing it can turn a repair into a full lock replacement.
